Marsala. The signs of the past of this
“splendidissima civitas” as Cicero
called it, who was quaestor in 75 B.C., still appear in every corner
of the city. Known by sec. XVIII for the wine and liqueur today
known for its numerous wine cellars open to visitors, it is an
ancient Carthaginian naval stronghold. Marsala is also historically
famous for the landing of Garibaldi, happened in 1860. Visit the
Cathedral of Norman origin, consecrated to St. Thomas of Canterbury
and the ship which was found and rebuilt in the Punic and the
archaeological museum at Baglio Anselmi
Trapani.
The capital of the province, is located on the beach with its
crescent shape, on the end of which stands the Tower of Ligny ,
built in 1761 today it houses the Museum of Prehistory. Visit the
San Lorenzo Cathedral dates to XV century, the Sanctuary of the
Pepoli Museum (with its beautiful collection of coral, gold and
silver), and during the Holy Week you can see the procession of
theMysteries.
Erice.
On the summit of Monte San Giuliano, the city of Erice, the ancient
city Elima. The old town has a medieval town plan. Erice is home to
the Center of Scientific Culture “Ettore Majorana”. You can visit
the Castle of Venus, the Museum Cordici.
Segesta.
Interesting archaeological site. Elima ancient city, now visited
for its ruins, the great Doric temple and the Greeek theatre used
each year for theatrical events of all kinds.
Natural
Reserve of Zingaro. It was the first nature reserve established
in Sicily. This beautiful reserve of about 7 km alongthe beautiful
and unspoilt coastline from the Gulf of Castellammare which extends
up to San Vito lo Capo. This is a rich reserve of rare plants and a
higt diversity of wildlife, rare to find in other parts of the
island.
The
Isle of Mothia. The isle of Mothia, was once an important
commercial and militar y
port of the Phoenicians. This island is the largest of the tiny
archipelago of islands of the Stagnone. Visit the Archaeological
Museum Whitaker, who retains the most important collection of
artefacts of the Phoenician-Punic Sicily, and the excavations with
the fortified wall whose remains are still clearly visible.
The most
famous archaeological underwater road that connects the island to
the mainland (Birgi) is a viable walk.
The
Egadi Islands:
Favignana is the largest island of the Egadi, it has always been
a strategic point for all peoples who have appeared on
that
sea. In the sea near the island was fought in 241 B. C.the epic
battle between the Carthaginians and the Romans, during the first
Punic War. The island with its beaches is a popular tourist
attraction. Every year from mid-May to early June is renewed the
traditional “mattanza”, tunny killing, au ancient rite, carried out
every year, like centuries ago.
Marettimo.
The island is considered one of the last paradises of the rare
uncontaminated sea. There is the almost total absence of cars and
all the noises, which makes it quiet. You can admire the magnificent
caves, rich in stalactites and stalagmites.
Levanzo
is the smallest of Egadi. Thanks to the mountainous nature it
preserves intact different plant species. The island is famous for
the Grotta del Genovese, with its graffiti on the rocks dating to
9200 B. C.
